13.12 Differentiation Flashcards
What is differentiation?
specialization of cell types during development
What is a totipotent cell?
cells that can differentiate into any cell type in blastocyte including inner cell mass and trophoblast
What is a multipotent cell?
cells that can become many, but not all, cell types
What is a pluripotent cell?
cells that can differentiate into any of the three primary germ layers but not the trophoblast
What are stem cells?
mature adult cells that have the ability to differentiate into nearly all cell types
What does it mean for a cell to be determined?
cell is said to be determined when the cell fate becomes fixed
What is dedifferentiation?
process by which a specialized cell unspecializes and may become totipotent
What can occur as a result of dedifferentiation?
cancer
