13.4 Androgens and Estrogens Flashcards
What are androgens?
all hormones involved in the development and maintenance of male characteristics
What are estrogens?
all hormones involved in the development and maintenance of female characteristics
What is the primary androgen?
testosterone
What is the primary estrogen?
estradiol
What are the male secondary sexual characteristics?
maturation of the genitalia
male distribution of facial and body hair
deepening of the voice
increased muscle mass
What are the female secondary sexual characteristics?
maturation of the genitalia
breast development
wider hips
pubic hair
What controls sex steroid production?
hypothalamus and anterior pituitary
What is gonadotropin releasing hormone?
GnRH = released by the hypothalamus and stimulates the pituitary to release the gonadotropins FSH and LH
What does LH do in men?
men = acts on intersitial cells to stimulate testosterone production
What does LH do in women?
stimulates the formation of the corpus luteum and progesterone secretion
What does FSH do in men?
stimulates the sustenacular cells
What does FSH do in women?
stimulates the granulosa cells to secrete estrogen
What inhibits the production of GnRH, FSH, and LH?
feedback inhibition by the steroids
What does inhibin do?
provides feedback regulation of FSH production
