13.2 Spermatogenesis Flashcards
What is the only process in humans that involves meiosis?
gametogenesis
What is gametogenesis?
process by which diploid germ cells undergo meiotic division to produce haploid gametes
What are spermatozoa?
haploid gametes produced by males
What are ova?
haploid gametes produced by females
What is the role of sperm?
swim through the female genital tract to reach the egg and fuse with it
What is syngamy?
fusion of egg and sperm
What is a zygote?
the result of fusion of egg and sperm
What is maternal inheritance?
both sperm and egg contribute equally to the genome but the ova provides every other part of the zygote
When does spermatogenesis occur?
puberty
Where does spermatogenesis occur?
testes; seminiferous tubule
What are germ cells?
cells that give rise to spermatogonia
Where do the final stages of sperm maturation take place?
epididymis
What causes inactivity of mature sperm?
inhibitory substances secreted by the duct deferens
Where do spermatids develop into spermatozoa?
seminiferous tubules
What is the sperm head?
contains haploid nucleus and the acrosome
