Define arranged marriage
Alliances between two extended families of similar social standing that usually involve an exchage of wealth and favour in addition to the union.
Define homogamy
marriages between people with the same social characteristics
Define infidelity
sexual activity outside one’s marriage
How is mate selection in Canada arranged by society?
Our society encourages homogamy, leading to most people falling in love of the same race, who similar age and social class
Why did families have lots of kids in pre-industrial societies?
- children supplied needed labour
- no effective birth control
- high death rate (before 1900 1/3 of children in Canada died before reaching 10)
Why has industrialization made children more of a liability than an asset?
It now costs a low-income family over $200 000 to raise a child, and as income increases as does the amount spent on children.
What is a latchkey kid?
Kids responsible for getting themselves home after school making dinner; left to fend for themselves
What is a skip generation family?
Housholds where no parents or middle generation is present (kids live with grandparents)
Why are baby boomers called the sandwich generation?
Because many of them will spend as much time caring for their aging parents as they did caring for their children
What determines both a family’s financial security and its range of opportunities?
Social class
What benefits might children in more affluent families have?
- Better mental and physical health
- better self confidence
- have better opportunities for greater achievements
What are some of the negative ways marriage impacts women?
Married women tend to have poorer mental health, less happiness and more passive attitudes towards life than sinlge women
