1.3.1 Product service design (2/2) - Social trends Flashcards
Modern society is far more…
and demands products that have limited…
-environmentally conscious
- demands products that have limited impact on the environment
Customers/People have become more aware about what
- linked to lifestyle
more aware about the effects their lifestyle have on the environment
More and more people have become concerned about what type of issues
- Global warming
- pollution
- resource depletion(using up of natural resources)
Businesses have been put under what and by who
‘team press’
Businesses have been put under pressure by governments and consumer groups to take into account for environmental issues in the design of their products
Businesses are likely to succeed if these 4 considerations are taking into account in the design of the product
The 4 considerations
- products designed for waste minimisation
- products designed for re-use
-products designed to be recycled (or produced from recycled materials) - products sourced ethically
Firms are now under pressure to do design products that..
minimise waste
they can do this in a number of ways
2 Ways in which businesses can design products that minimise waste
-Durable products that last a lifetime- this can be achieved by making products that have components that can be replaced and repaired
-Smaller + lighter design
Resources can be saved if products/packages are designed so that they can be re used
Ways businesses can design packaging/products
that can be re-used (2)
- design packages that can be re-used e.g returnable bottles - can be washed and re-used instead of thrown away
- design products so that components are re-used e.g phone parts. – this prevents waste
What should businesses adapt
And why
Businesses should adapt production methods
So that newly designed products can be produced using recycled materials
Ethical sourcing
Using materials , components and services from suppliers that respect the environment , treat their workforce well and trade with integrity
Advantages of adapting product designs to reflect changes in social trends
(3)
1) Waste minimisation, re use & recycling may help a businesses lower costs as using fewer resources -> can result in higher profits
3) Can use it as a USP ( Unique selling point) to differentiate product
4) Good reputation & viewed as good corporate citizens
Disadvantages of adapting products to fit social trends (4)
1) Higher overheads - e.g have to train staff how to behave ethically
2) Higher costs e.g sourcing from fairtrade suppliers rather than lower cost suppliers
3) Chance of reduced quality - not picking best quality but rather those that behave ethically or using recycled materials/re used materials
