1.3.1 product/service design Flashcards
what is the design mix
how a product functions, looks and how much it costs. three things that must be conisdered when making a product
what is the function of a product
-how it works
-does it do what its supposed to?
-is it reliable?
hat are the aesthetics of a product
-how it appeals to a customer in terms of looks and feels
what is cost
-can the design allow the product to be sold profitably?
-how much added value does the product have
why might a business prioritise function over aesthetics
it is the most important aspect of a product design as it determines how well the product will meet the needs of customers.
changes in the design mix to reflect social trends
social trends refers to changes in attitudes and behaviour of people. changes will require businesses to adapt their products to meet the needs of the customers still
what are two signficant social trends which impact the design mix
resource depletion and ethical sourcing
how does resource depletion impact the design mix
customers are becoming very aware of the need to conserve resources in order to reduced waste and help the planet, businesses may need to adapt their products to be more durable or to be easily recycled or repaired. this will help reduce waste and help minimise the needs for repeated purchases of the products.
how does ethical sourcing affect the design mix
ethical sourcing means that products are made without harm and exploitation of both workers and the envrionment. companies may change their design to incorporate sustainable materials
evaluation of social trends on the design mix
resource depletion and ethical sourcing may lead to increased demand but it may also affect business costs, for example a sustainable material product will cost more money to produce.
