1.3 Storage Flashcards
What is Secondary Storage?
Storage is needed to keep programs and data indefinitely
What are the 3 types of Secondary Storage?
Solid-state
Magnetic
Optical
What are the advantages of Magnetic Storage?
Magnetic devices are fairly cheap, high in capacity and durable.
What are the disadvantages of Magnetic Storage?
They are susceptible to damage if dropped.
They are also vulnerable to magnetic fields. A strong magnet might possibly erase the data the device holds.
Very slow compared with solid state devices
What are the 3 types of Media Optical storage that come in?
CD-ROM - Data cannot be overwritten
CD-R - Can only be written once but read many times
CD-RW - Like CD-R but can be written many times
What are the advantages of Optical storage?
Cheap
Portable
What are the disadvantages of Optical Storage?
Easily damaged due to scratching
Has a much lower capacity compared with other storage devices
What are the advantages of Solid State Storage?
Very fast, robust, and durable
What are the disadvantages of Solid State?
Expensive
Have a certain number of read/write times
What comparison factors do Storage Devices compare on?
Speed, Durability, Capacity
Cost, Portability, Robustness
How many bits are in 1 nibble?
4 bits
How many bits are there in 1 byte?
8 bits
How many bytes are there in 1 KB?
1024 or 1000
Why are SSD’s replacing HDDs?
Lighter, so suitable for portable computer / laptop
Data access is faster
Less power consumption / More energy efficient
How do you calculate the file size of a sound file?
Sample rate x duration x bit depth
