1.3 - Phylogeny Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function and importance of phylogeny? (2)
A
- Represents evolutionary relationships
- Essential to understanding evolution and physiological processes in living organisms
2
Q
Describe Homologous/Analogous traits
A
Homologous - emerged due to common ancestry
Analogous - convergent evolution leads to shared traits due to independent response to similar selective pressure
3
Q
What is a clade?
A
Monophyletic group of organisms that includes ancestor and all of its descendants
4
Q
What does paraphyletic mean?
A
Groups that are not true clades (don’t include all descendants of their common ancestor)
5
Q
How is Phylogeny reconstructed? (2)
A
- Direct evidence from fossils
- Inference from comparative anatomy and genomics
