1.3 Park Model Flashcards
Park Model
A model with that describes 4 stages of a tectonic hazard event: Pre-disaster, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction.
Pre-Disaster Stage
Modifying the cause of the event, trying to minimise vulnerability.
Relief Stage
The hazardous event happens and the initial search and rescue of people begins, this stage could also include help from national/international players.
Rehabilitation Stage
Continue support from national/international players, but the area also begins to modify the loss through the means of things like aid, temporary housing and services.
Reconstruction Stage
The permanent rebuilding of society’s physical and social infrastructure, during the rebuilding the area aims to reduce their vulnerability if things were to happen again and restoring vulnerability.
Christchurch EQ
2011, magnitude 7.1 followed by 6.3 on a previously unknown fault, 185 killed from mainly building collapse, significant liquefaction and infrastructure damage and $12 billion in losses (world’s 3rd most expensive).
Why Does Development Make Recovery Complex?
Differences in wealth reduces C2C.
Import engineers but region could be remote delaying shit.
Leaving behind indigenous traditions (Dhajji Dewari)
Corruption is more likely so mans are less likely to help.
Why Don’t Development Matter
Sometimes magnitude is just too high.
Less developed countries can still rely on loans and NGOs.
UN helps bare man
Resilience
The ability to resist, recover and adapt efficiently from natural hazards/disasters.
Factors Affecting Resilience
Awareness Of Event
Political Relations/Technological Advancements
Nature Of Damage/Amount Of Economic Damage
Insurance
