1.19 Too Hot To Handle Flashcards
Causes Of Intraplate Earthquakes
The lithosphere melts because of heat rising as a hot thermal plume, resulting in lower pressure at the base of the lithosphere.
Hotspots
Hotspots are volcanic locations that are fed by underlying mantle that’s very hot compared to surrounding mantle.
Mantle Plumes
Plumes occur at areas of mantles where heat rises, the high heat/lower pressure at the base of the lithosphere melts the rock.
How Do Hotspots Work?
Mantle plume rises to the surface, and the plate moves over the plume causing the island to move due to ridge push and slab pull, the magma is pushing under the crust forming a shield volcano, forming basaltic lava, eventually forming basalt rock. This basically repeats.
