What is scapholocephaly?
Premature fusion of the sagittal suture that creates a long narrow wedge shaped cranium

What is brachycephaly?
Premature fusion of the entire coronal suture that results in a high tower like cranium
What is plagiocephaly?
One side of the coronal suture closes prematurely and results in a twisted and asymmetric head
What is trigonalcephaly?
Failure of the frontal suture to close causing a triangular shaped head
How does one acquire a butt chin?
Incomplete fusion of the mandibular prominences
While on your NICU rotation, you are called to the delivery room to evaluate a newborn who is in respiratory distress. Upon arriving to the delivery room, you notice that the baby is using accessory muscles in order to breathe. In addition, you notice that the baby demonstrates nasal flaring. From which structure did the flaring part of the baby’s nose develop?
Lateral nasal prominence- forms the alae of the nose
The medial prominence forms the nasal septum, ethmoid bone, and the cribiform plate
