Why is carb loading helpful for exercise?
Increased glucose transport
Increased glycogen synthesis
Improved anabolic hormone secretion
Increased CHP metabolism
Who would carb loading help?
endurance athletes, not high-intensity ones
What is the depletion method?
Wipe out glycogen stores to trick the body into holding more because it’s starving.
Increase by 180-200% but could cause downregulation
Taper method? Recommended
Eat every carb in sight for 3 days
3-days tapering of exercise before the event with 8-10 g/kg CHO intake
Single Bout Method
The day before, Work out as hard as you can as hard as you can and binge carbs
How can you tell if carb loading worked?
- muscle biopsy
- Body weight (3g of water = 1g of glycogen
