The retrograde motion of the planets could be readily explained if the sun, rather than the earth were at the center of the universe, the earth is a planet, and the planets move around the sun in circles

A

as the Earth approaches a part of the orbit closest to Mars the production of the Earth-Mars line outwards the stars move slightly against the stellar background as Earth comes to the point in his orbit closest to Mars then passes it the projection of the line joining the two planets go backward since the Earth is going quicker than Mars as Earth continues to orbit Mars goes forward again
