Where is the original copy of the tools and appliances checklist kept, and where is the copy kept?
The original shall be kept on the apparatus and a copy in the company storeroom.
What time will the on-duty platoon commander of companies insure Inspection of apparatus and all tools and appliances? Where is this information recorded?
Apparatus inspection shall start at 0700 hours, daily. This shall be recorded in the company journal.
What are the guidelines for backing Department vehicles?
-Department vehicles shall not be backed without adequate assistance of at least one other member of the Department.
-All available members shall assist in guiding vehicles into quarters and in such other situations where circumstances dictate the necessity for extreme caution
-if no other members available, driver must dismount walk around unit to see if any obstruction before backing.
When shall all electrically operated devices such as lights, warning signals, AC Units, etc. be
turned off?
When they longer serving a useful purpose.
How often is the oil in the crankcase of apparatus checked?
Oil in the crankcase of apparatus shall be checked daily
What is the proper procedure used to check road transmissions?
To check the fluid level, start at operating temperature and the engine operating at 1000 RPM.
Remove the dipstick, clean, reinsert, remove again and check the fluid level.
If the fluid level is low, add fluid to the “full” mark.
Do not overfill as foaming may result, causing air bubbles in the fluid, which may cause transmission failure due to improper lubrication of parts.
Use only approved transmission fluid.
What is the maximum number of feet of hose that may be extended past the Foam Eductor?
200 feet
How often are grease fittings on apparatus lubricated?
Grease fittings on apparatus shall be lubricated once a month or
on the basis of service performed.
How often are priming pumps checked and lubricated?
Priming pumps shall be checked daily and
lubricated after each use according to type of pump
How often are discharge gates checked and lubricated?
Discharge gates shall be tested for free operation daily and lubricated when necessary.
How often are relief valves checked and lubricated?
Relief valves shall be operated at least daily and lubricated in accordance with the pump manual.
How often apparatus radiators checked and what is the proper procedure for filling a hot radiator with cold water?
The water level in radiators shall be checked daily. Cold water shall not be placed in the hot radiator of any apparatus, except slowly and with the engine running.
When an engine is sent to Fleet Maintenance Division for repairs and will be left unattended,
what equipment remains on the apparatus?
Engines shall be stripped of all tools and appliances except for one CO2 extinguisher.
When a Motor Vehicle Operator’s license is suspended or revoked, what will the member do
and to whom is it addressed?
All members, uniformed and civilian, shall promptly submit a special report to the Safety Officer through their appropriate/division bureau head.
When refueling apparatus or vehicles what precautions will be taken?
(Precautions while refueling apparatus or vehicles are listed 1 through 4.

-proper fuel
-don’t top off
When should the gaskets in the barrels and tips of play pipes, wagon pipes, monitor nozzles,
and ladder pipes be inspected?
All gaskets shall be inspected monthly and after each use.
How should the company numbers would be stenciled on fabric-covered hose?
Company numbers shall be placed approximately three feet from couplings.
How many 1 ½” pre-connected hose lines will be equipped on wagons? What are their lengths?
There shall be three pre-connected 1 ½” hose lines; one 350’ and the two remaining lines may vary from 150’ to 250’ in length.
Where is the tag placed on defective hose and what information is placed on the tag?
It shall be tagged at the defective end with the company number, year and nature of defect
placed on the tag.
What shall be done if Departmental vehicles receive the incorrect type of fuel?
Company officers shall notify FM immediately.
Do not start the vehicle until FM decides how the situation will be handled.
How shall tire pressure for all apparatus, vehicles and equipment be maintained?
At the proper level, as marked on the vehicle.
Who is responsible for the daily inspection and maintenance of all EMS equipment, and
where is the equipment carried on apparatus?
On-duty company officers and members shall be responsible for the daily inspection and maintenance of all EMS equipment.
EMS equipment shall be carried in one of the right side compartments.
When are apparatus wheels chocked, and who is responsible?
Any time the apparatus is parked
the driver shall be responsible for proper placement of the wheel chocks
What are the guidelines for cleaning apparatus?
- When cleaning apparatus, water shall not be applied into cabs of apparatus or
vehicles with hose lines. Instead, a mop or sponge shall be used. This also applies to
compartments as well as floorboards, particularly when they are equipped with floor
mats.
-The underside of apparatus including engines, chassis, springs, etc., may be steam
cleaned at an approved facility after permission has been received from Fleet
Maintenance. No steam or detergent shall be used on top of engines around the
carburetor, air cleaner, or electrical wiring.
-Apparatus shall be thoroughly greased immediately after being steam cleaned. Any grease fittings that cannot be greased shall be immediately reported to Fleet Maintenance Division.
