1.2 The Respiratory System Flashcards
Diffusion
Movement of gas molecules from high conc to low conc
Gaseous exchange
Movement of o2 from air into the blood
CO2 from blood into the air
Tidal volume
Volume of air breathed in or out per breath
Inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)
Air that can be forcibly inspired after a normal breath
Expiratory reserve volume (ERV)
Air that can be forcibly expired after a normal breath
Residual volume
Amount of air that remains in the lungs after maximal expiration
Spirometer
Device that is used to measure volume of air inspired and expired by lungs
Partial pressure
Pressure exerted by an individual gas when it exists within a mixture of gases
Conc / diffusion gradient
Explains how gases flow from high to low conc
Steeper gradient means faster diffusion
Cilia
Microscopic hair like projections
Sweep away fluids and particles
COPD
Chronic and debilitating diseases such as emphysema
Main cause is smoking
Shortness of breath
