1.2 - respiratory system Flashcards
what does the respiratory system do?
It allows us to takes in oxygen to burn up and extract energy from food and to get oxygen for muscles. Releases carbon dioxide gas which is toxic to us
what muscles are used for inspiration at rest?
- external intercostal muscles contract
- diaphragm contracts (flattens)
what muscles are used for inspiration during exercise?
- external intercostal muscles contract
- diaphragm contracts (flattens)
- sternocleidomastoid and pectorals contracts, pulling rib cage upwards and outwards
- scalenes contract
what muscles are used for expiration at rest?
expiration is passive, at rest, muscles simply relax
- external intercostal muscles relax
- diaphragm relaxes (domes)
what muscles are used for expiration during exercise?
muscles contract to help push air out the lungs by decreasing their volume and increasing pressure
- internal intercostal muscles contract
- abdominals contract
- external intercostal muscles relax
- diaphragm relaxes (domes)
what happens to the pressure and volume during respiration?
INSPIRATION
- pressure decreases, volume increases
EXPIRATION
