1.2 Protein Structure Flashcards
Describe primary protein structure
The sequence in which amino acids are synthesized into the polypeptide
Define secondary protein structure
Local folding of the polypeptide chain into alpha helices, beta pleated sheets, turns
What are the features of secondary protein structure
Alpha helices, beta pleated sheets, turns
What causes secondary protein structure
Hydrogen bonding along the backbone of the protein strand
Describe tertiary protein structure
Three dimensional folding pattern of the protein
What stabilizes tertiary protein structure
Interactions between R groups
Eg hydrophobic interactions, iconic bonds, London dispersion forces, hydrogen bonds, disulfide bridges
Describe quaternary protein structure
Proteins with two or more connected polypeptide subunits
What is a prosthetic group
A non protein unit, tightly bound to a protein and necessary to its function
Give an example of a prosthetic group
Haem group in haemoglobin
It’s presence allows haemoglobin to bind to oxygen
