1.2 Microscopes Flashcards
Brief overview on types of microscopes
Microscopes
Scientific instruments used to visualize objects too small to see with the naked eye
Microscopic
A description of something too small to bee seen by the naked eye
Microscopy
The science of investigating using a microscope
History of the light microscope
Earliest compound lens light microscope appears in Europe ~1620, and has various claims regarding the inventor
First description of cells
1665, Robert Hooke
Published findings into Micrographia
“animalcules”
1676, Anton van Leeuwenhoek observed motile objects which were actually just bacteria and protozoa
Light microscope
- uses lenses to bend light and magnify images by roughly 100-fold
- can be used to view living things in natural colour without killing/freezing them
- chemical dyes and fluorescent lighting may be used to clearly see specific structures
Calculation of magnification of specimen
Magnification = Objective lens x Eyepiece (ocular) lens
Calculation of magnification from image
Magnification = Image size/Actual size
(M.I.A)
Calculation of actual size from image
Actual size = Image size/Magnification
(A.I.M)
Electron microscopes
a type of very powerful microscope that uses electrons instead of light to produce a magnified image of something.
