1.2 classification Flashcards
define classification
the grouping of organisms according to their structural similarities.
what is the purpose of classification?
to impose order and a general plan on the diversity of living things.
what the aim of the classification system?
to reflect evolutionary relationships.
what was classification systems based on back then?
it was traditionally based on morphology and anatomy.
define morphology
the overall form and shape of an organism’s body, such as whether they had legs or wings.
define anatomy
the detailed structure, which could be determined by dissection.
define species
a group of organisms that can reproduce and produce fertile offsprings.
what is a DNA molecule made up of?
a DNA molecule are made up of strings of smaller molecules containing four different bases: A, C, G and T.
Explain how biologists can find out the relation of two different species.
Biologists can compare the bases of their DNA, so the more similar the base sequences are, the closely related these species are to one another. It would mean they share the common recent ancestor.
define binomial system
an internationally agreed system in which the scientific name of an organism is made up of two parts showing the genus and the species.
what is the scientific 2-word name called?
a binomial.
name the groups in the classification hierarchy, from the largest to smallest.
kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
