11.6 Factors Affecting Biodversity Flashcards
How are humans negatively influencing biodiversity
Deforestation - removal of forest to provide wood for building and fuel and to create space for roads, building
Agriculture - land being cleared ad planted with a single crop in order to feed population
Climate change - release of co2 and other pollutants form burning of fossil fuel is increasing global temperatures
What things cause deforestation
Can occur naturally - forest fires
Result of human action - deliberate
Indirectly human action - acid rain which form as as result of pollutants in atmosphere
How deforesation affects biodiversity
- reduces the number of trees preset in area
- specific tree types felled reduces species diversity
- reduces animal species as habitat destroyed including food source and home
- animals migrating to neighbouring areas resulting in in increase of other areas
How agriculture affects biodiversity
To be economically viable techniques are used to produce as much as possible of there chosen species this leads to reduction is biodiversity eg
- deforestation - increase area of land available for growing
- removal of hedgerows - reduces plant species destroys habitat
- I’ve of chemicals eg pesticides - destroys pest species and destroys food source og other organisms
-
Climate change affect on biodiversity
- melting of polar ice caps - extinction of few plant nd animal species
- rising seas levels - reduces available terrestrial habitats and water flowing further up rivers reducing habitat of freshwater plants and animals living near
- higher temperatures less rainfall - plant species failing to survive so drought resistant species becoming more dominant
