10.1 Classification Flashcards
What is classification
Is the process of naming and organising organisms into groups based on their characteristics
Name the 8 groups in the classification hierarchy from largest to smallest
Domain - Kingdom - phylum - class - order - family - genus - species
Based on recent studies of genetic material what level of classification was added into the hierarchy
Domain
What are hierarchical classification systems often referred to
Linnaean classification
Why do scientists classify organisms
- to identify species
- to predict characteristics
- to find evolutionary links
- scientists worldwide can share their research and the inks between different organisms can be see even if they live on different continents
What are the three domains the classification system is separated in
Archaea, bacteria and eukaryotic
What is a species
A species s a group of organisms that are able to produce to produce fertile offspring
As you move down the hierarchy what happens
There are more groups at each level but fewer organisms in each group
Organisms in each group become more similar and share more of the same characteristics
What is the scientific name for humans
Homo sapiens
Define binomial nomenclature
The scientific naming of a species with a Latin name made of two parts the first indicating the genus and the second the species
What are the two components in a binomial name
Generic name - the genus the organism belongs to
Specific name - the name the organism species
What is some advantages of using the binomial naming system for classifying species
It is recognised worldwide
Know which genus or species it belongs to
Avoids confusion of different common name for the same organisms
