11.4 fluid mechanics Flashcards
fluid mechanics
object traveling through any liquid or gas
drag force
resistance force caused by the motion through a fluid
acts in opposite direction to motion
produced by air resistance and friction
surface drag
friction between surface of an object and the fluid environment
- swimmers wear smooth clothing and shave in order to reduce this drag
form drag
refers to the shape of the object in motion
-cyclists streamline and decrease their surface area in order to reduce this drag
factors that +/- drag
velocity of moving body- faster = greater
surface area of body- larger=greater
shape of body- streamlines=less
Bernoulli principle
the faster the air travels the less pressure created
lift force
causes body to move perpendicular to direction of motion
keeps discus in the air
angle of attack
tilt of projectile allowing it to travel further
discus- angle up so air above has to travel further so is at less pressure
