1.1.3 Factors affecting obedience Flashcards
How does location affect obedience
Location impacts obedience level shown in Milgrams variation #10 when obedience drops. It Goes down from 65% to 45.5%. location is much less important than the physical presence of the authority figure.
How does proximity affect obedience
In Milgrams Variation 7 he investigates it and shows that the proximity of the authority is very important. When the authority was in the room it was 65% obedience when the experimenter leaves and calls instructions in it oges down to 22.5%.
How does gender affect obedience
There is no affect of gender on obedience.
- Milgram variation #8 found women had the same obedience level of 75%
- Burger (2009) found no difference in women and men in obedience level
How does culture affect obedience
Deference: how important is it to show respect to people in authority and follow leaders?
Individualism: how important is it to be an individual or to be a part of the group?
Justice: how important is it for people to do as they promised and get what they deserve?
Shame: how important is it to “save face” in the presence of other people and not look bad?
How does age affect obedience
Shanab &amd Yahya (1977) replicated Milgram’s study with children and teenagers at the University of Jordan. They compared 6-8 year-olds, 10-12 year-olds and 14-16 year-olds but didn’t find any statistical differences in obedience between the age groups. 73% went all the way to 450V, slightly higher than Milgram’s baseline result of 65%.
