What does CHIRPS stand for?
Culture, health and wellbeing, image, resources, people, socio-economic
Why is people a key influence?
People tend to choose the same activities as their friends or family.
Family - children frequently take part in the same physical activities as their parents.
Peers - influence of a peer group, people of the same age, is important. It is easier to succeed in a activity with the encouragement of support and friends
Why is image a key influence?
Fashion - many activities require the right equipment. Some brands are very fashionable and expensive as a result of media coverage of famous sport people.
Media coverage - the media influences many people’s choice of physical activity. Eg London marathon being shown on TV makes you want to do it
Why are cultural factors a key influence?
Disability people - can take part in many activities but poor availability is needed at local level
Age - can affect performance. Good to start young, but sometimes age restrictions on things eg marathon 🇬🇧
Older people could have health problems preventing them
Gender - some activities still offer one sex more opportunities than others eh boy doing netball
Why is resources a key influence?
Availability- suitable facilities and resources must be available
Location- some places may not have any facilities for some activities
Access - facilities need to be easily accessible
Time-facilities need to be available at the right time. Participants need to make time for practise and training
Why is health and wellbeing a key influence?
Illness and health problems can affect participation in physical activities. EG asthma person may not be able to do running but could go swimming.
But many people go to the gym or play sport to stay healthy
Why is socio-economic a key influence?
Cost- most activities have some associated costs- hit of facilities, lessons, equipment, shoes etc if people cannot afford to take part, their socio-economic status has influenced their involvement. EG running can be inexpensive but golf requires expensive equipment etc
What’s a role model?
People whose actions are emulated by others
Most activities offer opportunities to participate in what variety of roles?
Performing, coaching, volunteering, officiating, teaching
What initiatives are there to keep people involved?
Government initiatives Sport England Youth Sport Trust Active kids programme PE school sport and club links
What is the government initiatives?
The government introduced a policy to ensure all pupils their entitlement of two hours of high quality physical education per week. Encouraging participation and improve students fitness
What is sport England?
Is commuted to creating opportunities for people to start, stay, succeed in sport.
Start- increase participation in sport in order to improve the health of the nation, with focus on priority groups
Stay- retain people in sport; in clubs, sport facilities, coach, volunteers
Succeed- create opportunities for talented performers to achieve success
What is youth sport trust?
Aim to encourage student age 14-16 to organise, manage sport activities and dance festivals in primary and special schools.
What is the active kids programme?
Various supermarkets and other enterprises run Boucher programmes in which vouchers collected by parents can be used by schools to buy sporting and other equipment.
What is PE school sport and club links?
The government set up the PESSCL. Strategy to increase the take up of sporting opportunities by 5-16 year olds

What is foundation at the bottom of the participation pyramid?
At this stage most participants are likely to be learning basic sporting skills EG primary PE lessons, multi sports sessions @ sport centres
Provides a basis for personal development and future participation in a chosen sport
What is participation the second part of the participation pyramid?
Stage when young people begin to participate regularly in a specific activity for enjoyment. EG after school coaching, multi-skills clubs and school links. Sports clubs are important at this stage to make the next link to the next stage of development
What is performance on the third stage of the pyramid?
At this stage young people begin to concentrate on sport specific skills and develop talent in specific sports. Quality coaching is essential part of development EG organised sport development coaching weeks, active sports, club activity
What is elite on the top of the participation pyramid?
This stage is the peak of the pyramid, where individuals reach sporting excellence. Pyramid narrow as fewer people take part at this level. Governing bodies of sport are responsible for development at this level as players pass from county to regional to national squads
