11.2 Flashcards
Grey matter
cell bodies, dendrites, short unmyelinated axons.
outside of brain, inside of spinal cord.
White matter
myelinated axons inner brain and outer spinal cord
Spinal cord
protected by cerebrospinal fluid, soft tissue layers, spinal column, series of vertebrae
brain
forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain, protected by skull, meninges
Cerebellum
walnut shaped located behind cerebrum. unconscious coordination of posture, reflexes, body movements and fine motor control
Medulla oblongata
at base of brainstem. automatic involuntary responses such as heart rate, bp, blood vessels, breathing, swallowing, coughing.
Pons
relay centre between neurons of right and left halves of cerebrum, cerebellum, and rest of the brain
Midbrain
relays visual and auditory information between areas of hindbrain, and forebrain, eye movement and skeletal muscle control
Thalamus
connections betweem various parts of brain
great relay centre of the brain
Cerebrum
largest part of the brain, right and left halves, intellect, memory, consciousness, language, sensory information.
Hypothalamus
below thalamus, body internal environment, behavior, blood pressure, heart rate, body temp, thirst, hunger, emotions, control pituitary gland.
Cerebral cortex
cerebrum covering
language, memory, personality, vision, conscious thought, thinking, feeling
Corpus collosum
connects two hemispheres
right- creative and holistic
left- language, math
ocipital lobe
receive and analyze visual information
temporal lobe
processing visual info, auditory reception, understanding speech, retrieving visual and verbal memories.
