Which 3 categories can lighting loosely be divided into?
- Internal

Where is the Red Navigation light visible from?
A point directly ahead round to 110 degrees to the left side
Where is the Green navigation light visible from?
A point directly ahead round 110 degrees to the right of the aircraft
Where is the White navigation light visible from?
A point directly to the rear of the aircraft round 70 degrees to the left and right
What power are navigation lights normally supplied with?
28v AC or DC (Some aircraft have both)
Where are the flashing Anti-collision lights located?
On the top and bottom of the fuselage
What is the typical flashing frequency of strobe lighting?
60-70 flashes per minute
What is the stroboscopic effect?
Occurs after exposure to strobe lighting. Makes a moving/rotating object appear stationary, can induce epileptic fits
What are 3 typical locations for landing lamps
- Wing leading edges
- Undercarriage legs
- Flap track fairings
What are the two types of landing light units?
- Fixed
- Retractable
What is the initial surge current for Landing lights?
15x the normal value
What cautionary measure is in place due to landing lamp systems heating up?
A time limit of operation on the ground with no cooling airflow
What does the clutch on the Retractable landing light system do?
Causes the light to blow back into the retracted position at excessive airspeed
Where are turn off lights fitted and what do they do? [3]
- Installed in the side of the fuselage behind a flush mounted cover
- Fitted at an angle left or right of the aircraft’s axis
- Assists crew in runway and taxiway turnoffs in low visibility conditions
What do Ice Inspection lights do?
Illuminate the leading edge and sometimes engine intake lip on modern transport aircraft to allow visual inspection for ice
