11.14 Light Generation Flashcards
what sort of light bulbs are available in an aircraft?
-incandescent lamps
-halogen incandescent lamps
-gas discharge lamps/ strobe lights
-LED’s
-luminescent lighting
what is luminous intensity measured in?
candels or candela or more recently, lumens (amount of light radiated by a light source per second)
what voltage incandescent lamps are used on aircraft?
5V,12V and 28V
why are Incandescent lamps bad?
fillament slowly gets thinner and more brittle due to sublimation
what is better about halogen incandescent lamps compared to normal incandescent lights?
prolonged filament light due to gasses inside the bulbs
why must halogen light bulbs be touched by hand after or during operation?
extremely hot. grease will deposit on the glass if touched by hand and will weaken the glass
what is a strobe light?
a flashing light
what are strobe lights used for?
used for anti collision and beacon lights
what frequencey should strobe lights have ?
60-70 rpm however no more than 100 and no less than 40
what does LED stand for ?
Light Emitting Diode
what does the colour of an LED depend on ?
the material of the LED NOT the colour of the casing
what are the advantages of LED’s ?
-lighter (approx 30%)
-less power consumption (30-50%)
-longer life span (3-15x longer than incandescent or flourescent lights)
-resillient to knocks and vibration
-cheaper to run and maintain
what are the LED disadvantages ?
operating over 80`C will drastically reduce the LED service life
