How can tyres be classified
Type, ply rating, tubed or tubeless, bias play or radial
What are bias ply tyres
Traditionally used on aircraft, angle of plies is 30-60°
What is radial ply tyre
Ply goes in direction of tyre rotation
What are the 4 areas of the tyre
Bead, carcass plies, tread, sidewall
What is bead in tyres
High tensile strength steel wires, embedded in the rubber, tyres can have 1 2 and 3 beads
Benefits of tread on tires
Good traction in various runway conditions, improves directional stability, reduces hydro planing
What is a balance mark on a tire
A spot on tire, indicating lightest point on tire, should be matched with heaviest point on wheel
What are awl marks
Series of green or grey marks around bead of tubeless tire, indicate area where small holes are to let trapped gasses escape
What are max tyre where limits
2mm in any grove
Can wear pattens show tyre inflation
