11.14 Emergency Lighting Flashcards
why is emergency lighting essential?
so that in the event of an emergency, all crew members and passengers are able to easily identify safety equipment and exit routes even if the main internal lights have failed
what must the emergency lighting equipment include?
- illuminated emergency exit marking and locating signs
- sources of general cabin illumination
- interior lighting in emergency exit areas
- floor proximity escape path marking
- exterior emergency lighting
what is a common source of the emergency light system?
the main lighting system, however in case of an emergency, the emergency lights will be independently supplied so that they will still operate if the main electrical supply is down
what areas of the aircraft are iluminated in case of an emergency?
-in the aises
-to identify exits
-to identify routes to the exits
-outside the airplane at the slides
why might emergency lighting be dimmer than the main lighting?
as it is on its own battery not the main generators
how are emergency lights turned on?
they should come on automaticallt if main power goes out and should be able to be tuned on manually with switches iin the flight compartment or passenger compartments
what will happen if the emergency light switch is set to armed?
lights will come on in the event of aircraft power failure
how are modern emergency lights powered?
through self contained rechargeable battery packs that will power a group of emergency lights
why are floor proximity lights imstalled on the floor?
so that in case of a fire, lights are still visible as smoke will raise to the top of the cabin
where else other than the floor can floor proximity lights be installed?
seat tracks and seat support structures
what designs do floor proximity lights come in?
some have lenses over the lamps, in the shape of arrows and some pulsate towards the neares exit
what does luminescence mean?
The emission of light that does not derive energy from the temperature of the emitting body
what is a selt-illuminating lighting or luminescent lighting?
glow in the dark is used when there is no electrical power but is capable of emitting continuos light.
where are glow in the dark lights usually used?
self illuminated exit sign. they must emit enough light to be recognisable in the dark
what makes glow in the dark signs actually glow in the dark?
beta lights are filled with radioactive titrium gas (GLTS)
what certificate must be required if using titrium based lights?
a muiltitype STC ( supplemental type certificate )
what is used instead of gaseous titrum light source lighting in modern aircraft?
photoluminescent lighting strips
when does an electrical emergency exit sign illuminate?
when there is a power failure or when switched on
what does the definition of electroluminescence mean?
The emission of light, not due to heating effects alone, resulting from the application of an electric field to a material, usually solid.
what type of current does a electroluminescent light require?
A/C current
how is an electroluminescent light constructed?
a thin laminated structure in which a layer of phosphor is sandwiched between two electrodes one being transparent.
in an electroluminescent light, what causes the intensity of the light?
luminescent intensity is proportional to voltage and frequencey of the supply
how are slide and over wing lights illuminated?
either by the emergency lighting circuit or by the door girt bar mechanism
how are the emergency battery packs charged?
they are trickle charged
