Was the medieval period a time of change, continuity, or development?
Continuity; the Institution (the Church)
What factor(s) influenced and contributed to the inhibition of change in the medieval period? (5 factors)
Major - Key reason
Institution (e.g. the Church): controlled almost all aspects of life due to its power.
Minor - Influenced by key reason
Attitudes: encouragement of conservatism & respect for tradition and ancient ideas caused resistance towards change.
Technology (e.g. communication): hand written by monks; censorship of anything against church teaching meant development in new ideas was restricted.
Individuals: encouragement in support of Galen and Hippocrates’ work meant ancient ideas were still promoted and believed in.
Science (e.g. education): training by book learning rather than practical experiments, like dissections, meant physicians could not discover new or test current ideas for themselves.
