11.1 Sensation Part 2 Flashcards
What makes up the inner ear?
cochlea, semicircular canals, utricle, saccule
What aids in the sense of balance in the ear?
semicircular canals
utricle
saccule
What is the round window?
membrane covered hole in the cochlea near the oval window that releases excess pressure
What is the eustachian tube?
passageway from the back of the throat to the middle ear that functions to equalize pressure on both sides of the eardrum
What is the summary of hearing?
sound waves → auricle → external auditory canal → tympanic membrane → malleus → incus → stapes → oval window → perilymph → endolymph → basilar membrane → auditory hair cells → tectorial membrane → neurotransmitters stimulate bipolar auditory neurons → brain → perception
What is pitch?
frequency
How is pitch distinguished in the ear?
regions of the basilar membrane that vibrate and stimulate different auditory neurons
What is loudness?
distinguished by the amplitude of the vibration in the ear
How do we determine the location of sound?
two ears allows for stereophonic hearing
What is the auditory cortex?
where sound stimuli is processed in the brain in the temporal lobe
What does the vestibular system consist of?
three semicircular canals (utricle, saccule, and ampullae)
What is the cornea?
clear portion at the front of the eyes
What is the sclera?
white portion of the eye
What is the choroid?
layer beneath the sclera that contains darkly pigments cells which absorb excess light in the eye
What is the retina?
surface upon which light is focused; located at the back of the eye
