11.1 Sensation Flashcards
What are exteroceptors?
sensory receptors that detect stimuli from the outside environment
What are interoceptors?
sensory receptors that respond to internal stimuli
What are the five types of sensory receptors?
- mechanoreceptors
- chemoreceptors
- nocioceptors
- thermoreceptors
- electromagnetic receptors
What are four properties of the sensation that need to be communicated to the CNS?
- modality
- location
- intensity
- duration
How is modality communicated to the CNS?
type of receptor that is firing
How is location communicated to the CNS?
receptive field of the sensory receptor sending the signal
How is intensity communicated to the CNS?
frequency of the action potentials
How is duration communicated to the CNS?
tonic receptors fire action potentials as long as the stimulus continues and phasic receptors only fire action potentials when the stimulus begins
What is adaptation in relation to encoding of sensory stimuli?
decrease in firing frequency when the intensity of the stimulus remains constant
What is propprioception?
awareness of self and body position
What is gustation?
taste
What is olfaction?
smell
What are taste buds?
taste receptors
What are the different tastes and associated stimuli?
sweet - glucose
salty - sodium
bitter - basic
sour - acidic
umami - amino acid and nucleotide
Where are olfactory receptors located?
nasopharynx
