11.2 Flashcards
Biomass
The total quantity or weight of organisms in a given area or volume.
Productivity
Productivity refers to the rate at which organisms generate organic matter and energy
Efficiency
Efficiency refers to how effectively an organism or system utilizes energy and resources to carry out biological processes like growth, reproduction, and metabolism.
Inputs and outputs of: Photosynthesis
The inputs are carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and sunlight, while the outputs are glucose (C6H12O6), a type of sugar, and oxygen (O2).
Inputs and outputs of: Respiration
The inputs are glucose (sugar) and oxygen, while the outputs are carbon dioxide, water, and energy (ATP).
Explain why it is considered more efficient to eat at a lower trophic level vs. a higher trophic level
Eating at lower trophic levels is more efficient than eating at higher trophic levels because of the loss of energy as it moves up the food chain.
