1.1 The Basics Flashcards
What is a microbiota?
The sum of all micro-organisms in a specific environment.
Give an example of when usually safe bacteria becomes harmful?
Transfer of bacteria from the skin to the insides, eg. during surgery
List 4 ways bacteria can be spread
Physical contact Airborne Use of vectors (eg. mosquitos) Contamination of the environment Vertical transmission
List 4 investigations that can be done to determine whether or not a patient has an infection
Full blood count C reactive protein (CPR) Blood chemistry test (eg. Liver function test) Imaging- xray, MRI, ultrasound Histiopathology
Name 4 tests that can be done to specifically identify bacteria as the cause of an infection
Take a specimen Microscopy- Gram Stain Antigen detection Antibiotic susceptibility Culture Nucleic acid detection
Name 3 tests that can be done to specifically identify viruses as the cause of an infection
Antigen detection
Antibody detection
Detect viral nucleic acids (RNA/DNA)
What is an infection?
An invasion of a host’s tissues by microorganisms which cause disease by microbial multiplication, toxin release and a host responce
