What are the key issues in managing workplace performance?
It aims to directly link the organisational goals with the goals of the employee. It incorporates employee development, performance related pay and reward management.
How does performance management contribute to organisational goals?
Focussing on aligning the employees vision with the organisational goals. Performance management should aim for a shared vision of the organisations aims, and in doing so improve the employees performance and positive contribution to the organisation.
What are some sources of information for employees regarding counselling and support ?
Employees can receive support from professional counsellors either face to face, by telephone or e-counselling which is popular now. Employee assistance programs should be integrated into management culture to deal with employee concerns.
Explain the importance on dealing with poor performance as soon as it becomes apparent?
The manager should deal with poor performance immediately, finding out the reasoning behind it. If it is an external factor they can provide counselling and may fix the problem increasing the members working capacity. If it is an internal problem the manager can set goals and or discipline the worker giving them notice, this can motivate the worker to improve and show that poor performance is not tolerated and will be dealt with.
What are the issues involved with performance reviews?
Employees who have low levels of trust in their managers will not want to participate, those who feel they are continually observed with have trust issues.
If the sole purpose of the review is rewards, the employee will not want to discuss performance problems.
Explain the role of attendance management?
Absence is a sign of ill health in the workplace and can lead to low morale. Managers should have informal chats to check absence reasons, provide counselling if needed, return to work interviews are a good strategy to show the organisation notices when employees are absent, and can lead to providing support if the employee requires it.
