11 Organ Systems Flashcards
Integumentary system
Skin hair and nails all protects the underlying tissue
Regulates temp by controlling blood flow to the surface of the skin where heat can be released.
We need or we would over heat or be too cold
Muscular system
There are layers of muscles that that cover the bones and joints
They contract and flax to produce movement
How many muscles
650
Circulatory
Transport systems that carries oxygen proteins and nutrient chemicles to all parts of the body
Blood flows to all cells carrying nutrient chemicals + 02 and flows back to the hear carrying carbon dioxide the drops off to lungs and liquid waste which gets dropped off to bladder and clean blood goes to heart with new nutrients
Nervous system
The brain is the main organ
Sense receptors and nerves make up other parts
Transportation system for sending and receiving electrical chemical messages throughout the body
Lymphatic
Immune system
A network of vessels that collect fluid from tissues and returns it to the blood
Produces white blood cells and antibodies to fight bacteria/fungi and infections
Respiratory system
Lungs are the primary organ
Provides the site for the critical exchange of gases, the absorption of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide
Endocrine
Many body process are directed by hormones
These chemicals are released by glands of the system
Ex. A thyroid gland (releases adrenaline)
Digestive system
Breaks down food into chemical nutrients that can be absorbed by the blood into the small intestine and eventually the cells
Excretory system
Blood delivers liquid waste to the kidneys and bladder
Expels waste from the body in the form of urine
Reproductive system
Male organs (testes) produce sperm cells for the purpose of carrying half of the genetic material to the egg (fertilization) Female organs (ovaries) produce eggs which provides half of the genetic material for the egg The female organs (uterus) which nourishes and shelters the unborn baby
