MANAGEMENT DEFINITION?
“Management is a distinct process consisting of planning, organising, actuating and
controlling performance to determine and accomplish stated objectives by use of human
beings and other resources”.- George R. Terry.

- MIDDLE MANAGEMENT( departmental heads of organisation)
- LOWER LEVEL MANAGEMENT(first-line managers focus on execution and control)
MANAGEMENT IS ART OR SCIENCE?
BOTH. Art and Science are mutually interdependent and complementary. It is an art and is supported by the science of management. It is the oldest of arts and the youngest of sciences.

- Deployment of means for the purpose of accomplishing certain ends.
WHAT IS ART?
The term art means “applying skills and knowledge in accomplishing an end through
deliberate efforts”.

- Management is considered an art because it applied both knowledge and skill to achieve
objectives. - It is one of the creative arts as it is the organiser and utiliser of the total resources.
WHAT IS PROFESSION?
Profession is an area in which one professes to have acquired some special knowledge
used by way of either instructing, guiding, advising others or serving them.
MANAGEMENT AS PROFESSION?
- Existence of organised and systematic knowledge.
- Formalised method of acquiring training.
- A body to regulate the conduct and behaviour of members.
- Existence of Code of conduct.
- Service to society.
It can be concluded that management is moving towards professionalism.
The only missing aspect of professionalism is the absence of effective enforcement of
professional organisation.
