▪️🔹1.1 Inorganic Ions -chemical Elements Flashcards
What are inorganic ions?
What important functions do they have?
Inorganic ions are electrolytes or minerals
They are important in mcellular process’s including muscle contraction, nervous co-ordination and maintaining water potential in cells
What are the 2 types of minerals?
Micronutrients (minute concentrations) and macronutrients (small concentrations)
What is the role of magnesium ions (an inorganic ion)
What is caused in plants by a lack of magnesium
Important constitute of chlorophyll :: essential for photosynthesis, mammals need magnesium for their bones
Lack of magnesium = chlorosis
What is the role of iron ions (an inorganic ion)
What is a condition created by a lack of ion
Constitute of haemoglobin that transports oxygen in red blood cells.
Lack of iron= anaemia
What is the role of phosphate ions (an inorganic ion)
Found in biological membranes phosphate ions make nucleotides, including ATP, part of phospholipids
What is the role of calcium ions (an inorganic ion)
Structural component of bones and teeth in mammals
Part of plant cells walls, providing strength
Define an organic ion
Molecules that have a High proportion of carbon atoms
Define an inorganic ion
A molecule or ion that has no more than one carbon atom
