1.1- 1.6 Atomic Structure Flashcards
What are the ions found in the nucleus?
Nucleons
What letter is atomic number represent as? And mass number?
Atomic number- Z
Mass number-A
What ions determines the reactivity of a element?
Electrons
What is the equation of relative atomic based on isotopes?
(% x E) + (% x E)

What does the mass spec do?
Helps to…
Find out relative atomic mass, help identify molecules.
Where do u place sample molecules?
In the sample chamber?
After particles exits the sample chamber what happens?
Becomes ionised because electrons are fired and knocks off at least one electron from the particles and it becomes a positive ion.
Why is the whole apparatus kept under a vacuum?
So the ions doesn’t collide with molecules from the air.
Why does the particles gain kinetic energy?
Because the positive ions are attracted to the negative plate and goes through the gap.
What happens when the particles go through the gap?
Go through..
stop..
the l…
The particles go through a drift chamber; stop accelerating, the lighter ions move faster towards the detecter then the heavier ions.
What is ion drift?
How far the ions have traveled
Find out the RFM of 35Cl and 37Cl from the ratio of 3:1 u
(35x3) + (37x1)
——————— = 35.5

What is fragmentation?
Molecules that will be weakened and split into pieces resulting in a positive and neutral molecules.
How is the whole molecule dectected
The detector detects positive fragmented ions that are part of the sample other parts of the sample will be positively charge and will get detected, meaning we can now make up the sample.
Equation of kinetic energy?
And units?
KE= 1/2 MV^2
units=
m, kg
V, m/s
