1.1 Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A mixture is any combination of substances in which the substances are not combined on the chemical level.
What can different substances be described that can be called a mixture?
The different substances in a mixture can be large enough to be seen with the naked eye, like pebbles in sand, or they can be so small that the mixture looks like it has a uniform composition.
What 2 things are considered a pure substance?
Element or compound
Gold, water, and air
How are mixtures different from chemical compounds?
The parts in a mixture do not chemically combine, and they may be found in a variety of ratios.
What is a solution? Give an example
One substance called the solute is dissolved in a substance called the solvent.
What are the 2 main times of mixtures?
homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures
Describe the differences between the 2 main types of mixtures.
Homogeneous mixtures are evenly mixed, heterogeneous mixtures are not evenly mixed and can be physically separated.
What is a colloid? Give an example
Heterogenous mixture in which the particles are well mixed not dissolved and able to be seen under a microscope.
What is a suspension? Give an example
Heterogeneous mixture where particles settle out. Salad dressing
What is an emulsion? Give an example
Emulsions are a type of colloid that allows things to mix together that do not normally mix.
What are the ways you can separate heterogeneous mixtures?
Decanting, filtration, sifting. Just picking out.
How can suspensions be separated?
Suspensions can be separated by allowing the particles to sink to the bottom of the liquid.
How can colloids be separated?
They need to be heated or chilled
How you separate mixtures is dependent on the what?
Its Composition
How can you separate salt from a mixture?
By evaporating the water
Heterogeneous solid and liquid
Solid- salad liquid - salad dressing
Colloid examples
mayo, hairspray, shaving cream, and whipped cream
How can you separate sugar from a mixture?
Use alcohol to separate out the sugar. Salt does not dissolve in alcohol, so the sugar will dissolve and the salt will be left behind.
a substance that has the ability to be dissolved by a solvent to create a solution.
Solute
the substance that dissolves another substance.
Solvent
a method or component for separating substances from each other
Filter
to bring together, to mix
Combine
a measure of the average kinetic energy of the atoms in a system, used to express thermal energy in degrees
Temperature
A theory that explains that the properties and action of the particles making up a system affect the properties and actions of the entire system
Kinetic molecular energy
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the atoms in a system used to express thermal energy in degrees
Temperatures
A substance that has the ability to be dissolved by a solvent to create a solution
Solute
A method or component for separating substances from each other
Filter
A chemical change; a process that changes substances into new substances
Chemical reaction
The ability of a substance to be dissolved in a liquid
Solubility
A material which a particular chemical makeup
Pure substance
A substance that has the ability to dissolve a solute when forming a solution
Solvent
A chemical reaction; a process that changes substances into new substances
chemical change
a mixture of two or more liquids that cannot dissolve in each other
Emulsion
Not mixed with any other substances
Pure
A chemical combination of two or more elements
Compound
To bring together; to mix
combine
The amount of space an object or substance takes up
Volume (matter)
TO pull towards; opposite poles of a magnet come together
Attract
A mixture in which a solid and a liquid or two liquids are mixed so evenly that it is not possible to see separate particles
Solution
Made up of one uniform component often used to describe a mixture with a consistent composition and a single phase throughout
Homogeneous
The use of a chemical to find out something about a substance such as a PH test
chemical test
material that has mass and takes up some amount of space
Matter
A substance which the parts are clearly different shapes and colors different throughout
heterogeneous
the energy an object has because of its motion
kinetic energy
The physical matter of which living and nonliving things are composed
substance
An element or compound
chemical
a type of heterogeneous mixture in which fine particles are suspended in a liquid solid or gas medium
colloid
A combo of substances that can be physically separated from one another
mixture
