Q

How did Henry’s own marriage strengthen his position? 1402

A

Joan of Brittany, the widow of the duke of Brittany and daughter of
Charles II of Navarre. This marriage created an alliance with Brittany, an
area which throughout the 14th and 15th centuries declared its independence from the kingdom
of France. Ultimately, Henry’s hopes that the Bretons would support him against the French were disappointed, but, in the short term, the match must have had influence on the French and
strengthened Henry’s hand.
