Q

Why was this widely criticised?

A

partly on the grounds of the archbishop’s popularity.
It was extremely unconventional for a senior clergyman to be executed. Significantly, Henry’s old friend, Thomas Arundel, tried to intercede for Scrope and was assured that his fellow priest would not be executed, but the king then betrayed this trust and had the archbishop killed anyway.
