- Can be life-threatening

AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome)
A
sexually transmitted viral disorder that causes deterioration of the immune system & eventually results in death due to complicating infections that the body can no longer fight

A
Cause by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
May be transmitted from anyone w/ the infection through
- Unprotected sexual contact
- Shared needle
- Pregnancy, childbirth & breastfeeding
- Contaminated blood or body fluid
- Blood transfusion

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)
A
combination of at least 3 or more medications aimed at reducing the virus in the blood so that it is no longer detectable which delays progression
