Q

Specific functions of anterior leg muscles

A

iii. Tibialis anterior
1. Attachments: Proximally, lateral condyle, superolateral tibia, and interosseus membrane; Distally, medial cuneiform and base of MT 1
2. Actions: dorsiflex ankle, invert foot, support medial longitudinal arch of foot
iv. Extensor digitorum longus
1. Attachments: Proximally, lateral condyle of tibia and superoanterior interosseus membrane, distally, middle and distal phalanges of lateral 4 digits
2. Actions: extends lateral 4 digits; dorsiflexes ankle
v. Extensor hallucis longus
1. Attachments: Proximally, middle part of anterior fibula and interosseus membrane; distally, dorsal base of great toe’s distal hallux
2. Actions: extends great toe, dorsiflexes ankle
vi. Fibularis tertius
1. Attachments: Proximally, inferoanterior fibula and interosseus membrane; distally, dorsal base of 5th MT
2. Actions: dorsiflexes ankle, aids foot eversion

Q

Identify the extensor digitorum brevis

A

originates from the dorsal surface of the calcaneus and inserts onto the dorsal aponeuroses at the base of the middle phalanges of the 2nd to 4th toes.

Innervation: Deep fibular nerve (L5, S1).

acts to extend the 2nd to 4th toes at the metatarsophalangeal (MPT) joint and the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint.

Q

Identify the extensor hallucis brevis

A

originates from the dorsal surface of the calcaneus and inserts into the dorsal aponeurosis and proximal phalanx of the 1st toe.

Innervation: Deep fibular nerve (L5, S1).

acts to extend the 1st toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint.

17
Q

Identify the dorsal interossei mm

A
  1. Attachments: Proximally, sides of MT 1-5; distally, first – medial side of proximal phalanx of 2nd digit, 2-4 – lateral sides of digits 2-4
  2. Actions: abduct digits 2-4 and flex metatarsophalangeal joints
  3. Innervation: lateral plantar n. (S2-S3)
18
Q

Identify the muscles of the lateral compartment of the leg.
What are they innervated by?
What is their general function?

Fibularis longus
Fibularis Brevis

A

Innervated by Superficial fibular nerve (L4-S1)

Actions: mainly evert foot

Fibularis longus

  1. Attachments: Proximally, head and superolateral fibula; distally, base of 1st MT and medial cuneiform
  2. Actions: evert foot, weakly plantarflexes ankle, supports transverse arch of foot

Fibularis brevis

  1. Attachments: inferior 2/3rds of lateral fibula; distally, base of 5th MT
  2. Actions: evert foot, weakly plantarflexes ankle
19
Q

Identify the Superficial fibular nerve and Describe its course

A

i. Superficial fibular nerve (L4-S1)
1. Lateral compartment n., terminal branch of common fibular n.
2. Supplies muscles in lateral leg and carries on as a cutaneous n., supplies skin on anterior leg and dorsum of foot
Clinical: Shin splints, Foot drop

20
Q

Identify the Deep Fibular nerve. Describe its course

A

L5-S2

passing through the anterior crural intermuscular septum to innervate muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg
