Q
  1. What does the VSEPR theory state?
A
  • it states that electron clouds/domains/regions repel each other due to their like negative forces
  • these electron domains should stay as far away as possible from one another
  • this makes molecules stable

Q
  1. Why is the VSEPR theory helpful?
A
  • it helps us find the best possible shape for the molecule to be in
  • in order for it to be at its highest stability
  • it is useful for finding the geometry (shape) of the molecules

Q
  1. What is the process of discovering the basic geometry (shape) of the molecules?
A
  1. Draw the correct Lewis Structure
  2. Find the number of regions of electron density on the
    central atom
(these are the bonds or the lone pairs)
NB: one region/electron cloud= a double, single, triple
    bond or lone pair
  3. This gives us the basic geometry (electron pair)
