What does the bible suggest about the end of time
The bible suggests that the end of time will be signalled by a cosmic disaster and after this Jesus will come to judge the whole of creation
What is death
- death is a transition to a new phase of life
- death is not something to fear because it is the start of eternal life without the limitations of earthly body
What is judgement
- catholics believe that after they die they will be judged by God
- God will consider everything they have done in their lifetime
- moment of truth when people have to accept responsibility for all their actions
What is heaven
- if people are judged favourably and able to accept God, they will be entered into heaven
- state of eternal happiness in the presence of God
- in heaven, gods love removes all worries
What is hell
- if people are judged unfavourably and not able to accept God, they will be sent to hell
- place of seperation to God and eternal suffering
What does the parable of the rich man and lazarus say
Tells the story of a rich man who had everything in life but never gave anything to the poor. A homeless man who lay on the gates to his house represents the poor. And then when they die, the rich goes to hell and the poor goes to heaven
What does the rich man and lazarus parable mean
Teaches christians about the nature of heaven and hell and also what type of actions and behaviour result in someone being sent where they go
Why is someone sent to purgatory
Catholics believe that when people are judged before God, many want to accept the offering of heaven. But many are overwhelmed by the presence of God and it makes people ashamed. Even though God forgives them, they still want to make it up to God. Therefore, they are sent to purgatory where they are cleansed of their sins so the person can feel happy in the presence of God
What is particular judgement
- happens immediately after a person dies
- when God judges someone on individual basis and they are sent to heaven hell or purgstory
What is final judgement
Happens at the end of time. Christ will come in all it’s glory and judge the whole of creation

- All people are naked - shows people are equal in death
- people are rising from graves showing all people will be raised up for judgement on the last day

Why and when does the anointing of the sick take place
When a person is seriously ill, facing a major operation or showing signgs of weakeness of old age. Gives physical and spiritual strength

- priest sprinkles room and person with holy water as it reminds them of baptism
- the sick person will confess their sins to the priest
What is the commendation of the dying
Short service that is centred around the reception of the dying person’s last communion

- the person dying may hold a crucifix as a reminder they are sharing in christ’s death

- reception of the body

- body is placed beside the paschal candle
What is the committal
End of mass and the priest will say that any sins commited by the deceased shall be forgiven and the coffin is sprinkled again with holy spirit

What is the sanctity of life
The idea that all life is holy because it is made by God
How does the sanctity of life link to caring for the dying
As all life it holy, it should therefore be respected and valued. This also means that life should not become less valuable when dying or elderly
What is euthanasia
Situation where someone helps another person to die in order to end their suffering
2 reasons the church is against euthanasia
- considered to be murder and morally unacceptable
- only God has the right to take away life
Catholic belief about burial and cremation
Catholics believe in the resurrection, the body will be judged in God’s presence. Therefore the body should be treated with respect even after death
What are tombstones
Larged carved stone that is placed over a persons grave. It indicates the location of the grave, so it can be treated with respect. Shaped cross showing their belief in Jesus and some with angel (the belief that all people have a guardian angel)
What are monuments
Structure built to remeber an important person or event and some saints have one to indicate their importance. Some decorated with chi rho shows belief in Jesus
What are Memorial gardens
Outside areas where the ashes of people who have been cremated can be kept
What is cosmic reconciliation
Idea that the relationship between God and humans was broken by sin but this relationship was restored when Jesus’ died and was resurrected
Who was julian of norwich
Medieval writer who received a series of visions from Jesus
When Julian of norwich asked jesus why there is sin what did he say
“It was necessary that there should be sin; but all shall be well and all will be well and all manner of thing shall be well”
What does Jesus’ response to Julian mean
- sin is necessary because God gave humans free will
- but all should be well because sin will be defeated and all things will be made perfect at the end of time
Second vatican council account on end of time
- christ will come in all its glory as the judge and the saviour
- no one is predestined to go to heaven or hell
- God doesn’t send people for hell
- people should constantly be preparing for the end of time
