What is animal welfare?
Concern for animal suffering and for animal emotional experiences - should be seen as being on continuum
Welfare vs health vs production vs conservation
Focus is often on physical health
- especially in livestock production and its impact on production outputs
Conservation is focused on protection of environment of a species
Welfare concerns mental as well as physical wellbeing
What is suffering?
Unpleasant emotional state that disrupts quality of life
- mental state associated with unpleasant experiences
What are the requirements needed to suffer?
Alive
Sentient
Capacity to suffer
What is allodynia?
Response to touch or manipulation
What is anhedonia?
Total loss of feeling or enjoyment - food rewards, play, social and sexual interactions
