Q

what are the key questions for appraising studies of reliability?

A

• Is the study’s purpose relevant to my clinical question?
• Would my patient qualify for this study (inclusion/exclusion)?
○ Study could be established w/ pop. Different to patient pop.
• Are measures relevant to my clinical question
• Applied in a clinically replicable and consistent method?
○ Depends on the method
○ Consistency: not too sophisticated to be reproduced
• Population sufficiently similar to my patient?
• Sample size and number of raters
○ Should be high as possible
○ 2 raters is adequate
• Sufficient diversity of sample?
• Are study participants stable in the characteristics of interest?
○ Difference in between take and re-take
○ Did you just have coffee? Etc.
○ Difference between days can be great (TKA)
• Blinded raters?
○ Rater can remember measurement taken a couple minutes ago, so biased
• Timing of reassessments?
• Results: Are SEM and MDC values reported! (not just ICC values)
○ Look for what’s meaningful
○ Inclusion/exclusion
○ What they were testing
○ How well was the test conducted
○ What do they say about results/how to interpret
