1 way independent/between participants ANOVA Flashcards
what are the characteristics of the study in order for a 1 way independent ANOVA to be carried out?
differences > continuous DV + categorical IV > between ppts > independent t test
what are the assumptions of a 1 way independent ANOVA?
continuous DV, normal distribution, no outliers, equal variance
there are no differences between the error (within groups variance) in each group =
equal variance
what do you do if assumptions are violated?
can run a non-parametric 1 way ANOVA
what do you select on SPSS to produce histograms and box and whisker plots?
ANALYSE > DESCRIPTIVE STATS > EXPLORE. DV into dependent list box and IV in factor list box. factor levels together. tick histogram box
what type of outliers are extreme and violate the assumptions of ANOVA?
star shaped
what are the SPSS steps to produce error bar graphs in between ppt designs?
graphs > legacy dialogs > error bar.
simple > summaries for groups.
DV goes in variable box and IV goes in category axis
the SPSS output provides Levene’s test of equal variances. what outcome means you have met the assumption of equal variances?
a non significant outcome (higher than 0.05)
how would you write up that equal variances can be assumed?
Levene’s test of equality of error variances based on the mean is not significant. we can therefore assume there are not significant differences between the error variances and the assumption of equal variances has been met
give the values that are reported from a 1 way ANOVA
F(effect df, error df) = [Fvalue], p =[p value], np2 = [np2 value]
what are the steps to run the ANOVA on SPSS?
ANALYSE > GENERAL LINEAR MODEL > UNIVARIATE. DV to dependent variable box and factor to fixed factors box. select plots. move factor to ‘horizontal axis’
what options should be selected to run the ANOVA
descriptive stats, estimates of effect size, homogeneity tests
in the output what values need to be included in the ANOVA write up?
F value, p value, df values of error and effect, np2 value
if the ANOVA is significant what needs to be carried out to find out where the differences lie?
post hoc tests
