1. Introductuon To Microbiology Flashcards
What’s microorganisms
Very small organisms;
Sized in the micrometer range
Visible by mean of a microscope
What are some types of microorganisms
•prokaryots: bacteria and archea
•eukaryotes: fungi, algae, protists
•Viruses(open question)
•subviral agents
•prions
Are diseases caused by microorganisms transmissable?
Yes,mostly
Do microbes grow spontaneously in sterile medium?
No. Proven by many experiments(pasteur flask)
What are Koch’s postulates?
-it’s golden standard methodological rules for the identification of the causatuve agents of infectious diseases.
They are:
1)Microorganisms must be present in every case of the disease but absent in healthy organisms
2)The sustepcted microorganisms must be isolated and grown in a pure culture
3)The same disease must result when microorganism is innoculated into a healthy host
4) The same microorganism must be isolated from the diseased host
Are Koch’s postulates “faulty”
There are some exceptions(like HUV that doesnt go by 2nd,3rd and 4th rule) but they still stand as a good starting point of a casual relationship between microbial agents and diseases
What are 3 main domains in tree of life
Bacteria
Archaea
Eukarya
